Kodak Zi8 + Zoom H4n Audio Test + Review
After having done a quick video test for the Kodak Zi8, I decided to do something which would focus more on its audio recording capabilities. I also wanted to test the Zoom H4n, a portable flash recorded I recently purchased so, here I am, killing two birds with one stone. I setup the Kodak Zi8 about 5 feet from the sound source, which is an upright piano that’s me noodling on it. The Zi8 is mounted on a tripod. About 15 feet away from the piano, I’ve setup the Zoom H4n recorder. This unit has an XY stereo microphone built into it. It also has the ability to record two inputs, in the form of XLR or 1/4-inch. So, we’ll be hearing the built in XY microphone on the unit as well as a pair of AKG 414s which I positioned above the piano, pointing into the open lid. “Kodak Zi8 Internal Microphone” Here we hear the internal microphone on the Zi8. Mono, a bit noisy and perhaps a little too close to the piano to capture a clean sound. In any case, this does the trick for capturing an idea, but definitely doesn’t cut it if you’re looking for high-quality audio. “Zoom H4n XY Microphone” Here the stereo image opens up suddenly. This XY microphone which is built into the unit is capturing a very natural, coincident stereo sound. It’s a very reflective room, so you hear that, as the microphone is about 15 feet from the sound source. “Zoom H4n Pair AKG 414s” Here we’re hearing the pair of AKG 414 microphones pointing into the piano. Because the microphones are very close to the sound …

Lens Modification of the Kodak Zi8 – Macro Test
After purchasing the Kodak Zi8, I wasn’t happy with the angle of the built-in lens, nor was I happy with the macro aperture. I then purchased a Magnetic / Detachable Wide Angle + Macro Lens from usbfever.com. The Magnetic Lens attachment took 2 minutes to install and here is the first video I took with the macro lens. What do you think of the results? The 0.68X Wide-angle lens will be tested during daylight hours in the day or so. I’ll post those as well…
Kodak Zi8 Flip Creative Vado Sponge Mount Tripod for Car or Truck Dashboard
A look at how to easily make a mount for your pocket camcorder (whether it be the Kodak Zi8, Flip Ultra, or Creative Vado). Works by using a carwash sponge and cutting a spot for the camcorder in it. Then putting it on the dash. Functions as kind of a tripod without legs. Also features some footage of me driving with the mount in place. Videos courtesy of my Kodak Zi8. 720p at 30fps. Organized in iMovie.
Kodak Zi8 With Olympus ME52W Mic, Testing
I made this video to check out a new mic, an Olympus ME52W, noise-canceling, uni-directional mic on my Kodak Zi8. I unplugged it a short time into the video and the recorded sound got louder, which was surprising as I’d read that the mic was more sensitive. “More sensitive” than what: an Olympus digital recorder, probably. There is a question about whether the Zi8 provides power to the mic, as is required, according to the user instructions accompanying the mic. But, if it does not, why would there be any recorded sound, and there is. So, I assume this is not the reason for the reduced volume of the mic as compared to the Zi8′s built-in mic. The Zi8 has adjustable mic sensitivity, which I used to try to keep the level from going into the red area. Trouble is, when you turn the camera off, the level setting reverts to the default—not your custom setting. So, if you forget to re-adjust it, you may not have the setting you desire. I mention this to explain variations of sound level that you will hear. I’ve annotated the video at the points where I unplugged and re-plugged the mic, but it will be obvious as the sound volume increases when I unplug and decrease when I re-plug. The Zi8 sensitivity setting was not altered during this period. The performing group is Rocky and the Rollers At The Villages, Sumter Landing, 8/10/2010

Please fast forward to 01:40, I don’t know how to edit just yet – lol. I maidened this new scratchbuilt plane 5 minutes before throwing on the cam & shooting this vid. Plane is twin motor, 1.6 m ws.. Kodak Zi8 cam, shooting @ 720 p/60fps. No wind, but still a bit of a wobbly flight. I hope next time will be more stable.
